津田塾大学::創立110周年記念公開講座「Measuring Second Language Vocabulary Size」
11月6日(土) 13:30~15:00
(千駄ヶ谷キャンパス)津田ホール会議室T101、T102
Research on measuring vocabulary size of both native speakers and non-native speakers has suffered from very severe methodological problems. Recent more reliable research, however, indicates that young native speakers of English increase their vocabulary by around 1000 word families per year and young immigrants to an English-speaking country increase their vocabulary at the same rate. There is also increasing evidence that learners of English as a foreign language know vocabulary from a very wide range of word frequency levels, often because of the rapidly increasing number of English loanwords in their first language. This talk describes the evidence and the difficulties in measuring vocabulary size, and provides suggestions for encouraging vocabulary growth. (This lecture will be in English.)
